Oakville Neighbourhood Guide

Lakeside town with highly sought-after schools, mature neighbourhoods and an easy GO commute

Oakville sits on Lake Ontario between Mississauga and Burlington. It is known for well-kept neighbourhoods, a historic downtown, lakefront parks and schools that many families move here for. It is one of the GTA's most popular choices for families upgrading to a larger home.

Popular neighbourhoods in Oakville

  • Old Oakville: Historic downtown, lakefront estates and character homes near shops and the harbour.
  • Bronte: Waterfront village feel with Bronte Harbour, parks and a mix of homes.
  • Glen Abbey: Family neighbourhood built around the golf course, with trails and parks.
  • Joshua Creek and Iroquois Ridge: Popular with families for larger detached homes and nearby schools.
  • Clearview and Morrison: Quiet, established areas with large lots close to the QEW.
  • River Oaks and West Oak Trails: Newer family subdivisions with parks and trail systems.
  • North Oakville (The Preserve and nearby): New construction townhomes and detached homes north of Dundas.

Homes you will find

Mostly detached homes and townhomes, with luxury estates near the lake and newer subdivisions north of Dundas Street. Condo options are growing near the GO stations, Uptown Core and along Trafalgar Road.

Getting around

Oakville GO and Bronte GO are on the Lakeshore West line, with frequent trains to Union Station. The QEW, Highway 403 and Highway 407 run through town, and Oakville Transit connects neighbourhoods to the GO stations.

Schools

Public schools are run by the Halton District School Board (HDSB) and Catholic schools by the Halton Catholic District School Board (HCDSB), with French-language options from Viamonde and MonAvenir. Many schools here are in high demand, so confirm the boundary for any home you consider. Sheridan College's Trafalgar campus is also in Oakville.

Things to do

Waterfront parks, Bronte Creek Provincial Park, Sixteen Mile Creek trails, the downtown Kerr Village and Lakeshore Road shops, and a strong local arts and sports scene.

Buying tips for Oakville

  • School boundaries drive demand. Two similar homes on either side of a boundary can sell very differently.
  • Homes near the lake or ravines may fall under Conservation Halton rules, which can affect additions and pools.
  • In North Oakville new-build areas, check Tarion warranty dates and any outstanding builder items.
  • Older homes in Old Oakville may have heritage designations that limit exterior changes.
