Toronto is really a city of neighbourhoods. Each one has its own main street, schools and character, and prices can change a lot from one side of a major road to the other. Whether you want a condo near the office, a semi with a backyard or a detached home near a top school, the right street matters as much as the right house.
Downtown is mostly condos and townhomes. Older central areas have semis, row houses and Victorian homes, many with laneways or basement suites. North York, Etobicoke and Scarborough offer more detached homes and larger lots.
The TTC subway (Lines 1, 2 and 4), streetcars and buses cover most of the city, and Line 5 Eglinton, which opened in 2026, adds an east-west link across midtown. GO trains run from Union Station to every corner of the GTA. Main highways are the 401, the Gardiner Expressway, the Don Valley Parkway and the 427.
Public schools are run by the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and Catholic schools by the Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB). French-language schools are run by Conseil scolaire Viamonde and Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir. School boundaries can split a street, so always check the exact address.
Lake Ontario's waterfront, the Toronto Islands, High Park, the ravine trail system, pro sports, theatre and some of Canada's best food neighbourhoods are all within the city.
